They are based on an early 20th century design by American Rose O'Neill. 
The comic strip inspired porcelain dolls from Germany and later, plastic versions were made in Japan.
Kewpie dolls became a global phenomenon, finding popularity in the United States, Australia, Japan, and other regions.
